At Woolmers, explore 18 original heritage buildings, the Unshackled convict experience, and the National Rose Garden across 13 hectares of grounds. The Woolmers Experience guided buggy tour runs at 10:30am and is available to add to your visit.
Convict Farm Walk
The Convict Farm Walk follows the Macquarie River between both properties, covering the same ground assigned convicts walked between the two estates.
Brickendon Estate
At Brickendon, settled in 1824 and still farmed by 7th-generation Archer descendants, a working heritage farm in Tasmania with more than 20 convict-built buildings in the 1820s Farm Village, including a Gothic chapel, woolshed, smokehouse and timber pillar granary. The 4-hectare Heritage Gardens surround the Georgian homestead. Daily animal feeding runs at 10:15am on this 465-hectare working property.

Free parking is available onsite, with dedicated spaces for caravans and motorhomes. The estate is easily accessible for larger vehicles with no narrow lanes or difficult turns.
From Launceston 20 minutes
Head south on the Midland Highway, take the Longford exit and follow signs to Woolmers Estate.
From Launceston Airport 15 minutes
From the Heritage Highway Less than 5 minutes
Woolmers Estate is just off the highway, making it an easy stop on any journey between Launceston and Hobart.
From the Spirit of Tasmania terminal (Devonport) Aproximately 1 hour
Via the Bass Highway and Midland Highway. If arriving with a caravan or motorhome, Woolmers Estate is directly on your route south along the Heritage Highway. No detour required.

Watch for wildlife
Tasmania’s native wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk. Take care on rural roads in the Longford area, particularly during these times.

What to Bring
Woolmers Estate covers 13 hectares of grounds and gardens. While you will explore several intact heritage buildings during your visit, much of your time will be spent outdoors.
Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on gravel paths and garden tracks.
Dress in layers. Tasmania's weather can change quickly, and the Northern Midlands can be cooler than the coast. A light jacket or jumper is recommended even in summer.
Bring sunscreen and a hat, and a raincoat in cooler months.
Carry water, particularly on warm days. Water is also available for purchase at the Nigel Peck Centre.
Convict Farm Walk
If you are planning to walk the 2.8km Convict Farm Walk to Brickendon Estate, closed-in shoes are essential and we recommend bringing water and sun protection for the track.
Food & Drink
The Rose Garden Café at the Nigel Peck Centre offers a menu of locally inspired dishes featuring Tasmanian produce, with views over the estate grounds. It is open during estate hours.
We recommend allowing time for a meal or coffee during your visit, particularly if you are planning to walk to Brickendon Estate or spending a full day across both properties.

Mobility
The Visitor Information Centre, Nigel Peck Centre (galleries, restaurant, and shop), and the National Rose Garden are accessible for wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility. Not all heritage buildings are fully wheelchair accessible due to their original construction. Our staff can advise on which areas are most accessible.
The Woolmers Experience
The guided buggy tour is the most accessible way to experience the full estate. Rather than walking between buildings, you are driven by buggy across the 13-hectare property. If accessibility is a consideration, we recommend this tour.

Accessible parking is available close to the Visitor Information Centre entrance.
Companion card
Woolmers Estate recognises the Companion Card program. Visitors accompanied by a Companion Card holder will receive a complimentary ticket. Please present your Companion Card at the Visitor Information Centre.

Accessible toilets are available at the Nigel Peck Centre. Other toilets are also available within the estate grounds.
Assistance animals
Certified assistance animals are welcome at Woolmers Estate. Please bring your certification. We ask that all animals remain on lead while on the estate grounds.
The Assistance Farm Walk
The 2.8km walk to Brickendon Estate is not wheelchair accessible. The track includes a suspension bridge over the Macquarie River and uneven terrain. Both estates are accessible by car and are only a few minutes apart by road.
Wake Up in World Heritage
Woolmers Estate offers heritage accommodation in six beautifully restored convict-built cottages, sleeping up to 16 guests. Accommodation guests receive after-hours access to the estate after day visitors leave at 3:30pm.

How long should I allow for a visit to Woolmers Estate?
Allow at least two to three hours for General Admission, which includes access to all 18 original heritage buildings, the Unshackled digital exhibition, a hosted experience inside the homestead, and the National Rose Garden. If you add The Woolmers Experience guided buggy tour, allow an additional 90 minutes. If you are visiting both Brickendon Estate and Woolmers Estate with the combined admission ticket and walking the Convict Farm Walk between them, a full day is recommended.
Do I need to book in advance?
General Admission does not require advance booking. You can purchase tickets at the Visitor Information Centre on arrival and explore the estate at your own pace. The Woolmers Experience guided buggy tour is limited to seven guests per session and we recommend booking in advance to secure your place, particularly during peak season (October to April). Heritage accommodation should always be booked ahead.
Can I bring my dog to Woolmers Estate?
Well-behaved dogs are welcome on the estate grounds provided they remain on lead at all times. Please be mindful of heritage buildings, gardens and other visitors. Dogs are not permitted inside the homestead, Nigel Peck Centre or heritage accommodation. Certified assistance animals have full access. Please note: Brickendon Estate is a working property with farm animals. Dogs must remain on lead at all times. Owners are responsible for their dogs around farm animals.
Can I take photos at Woolmers Estate?
Personal photography is welcome throughout the estate. Please tag us in your images so we can share your experience. Commercial photography and filming require prior approval. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Is Woolmers Estate suitable for caravans and motorhomes?
Absolutely. Woolmers Estate is less than five minutes off the Heritage Highway with free onsite parking and plenty of room for caravans, motorhomes and larger vehicles. There are no narrow lanes or difficult turns to navigate. If you are travelling with the Spirit of Tasmania or driving your own vehicle through Northern Tasmania, Woolmers is directly on your route with no detour required.
How far is Woolmers Estate from Launceston?
Woolmers Estate is just 20 minutes from Launceston CBD and 15 minutes from Launceston Airport. We are located in Longford, in Tasmania’s Northern Midlands, less than five minutes off the Heritage Highway.
Can I visit both estates in one day?
Yes, and we recommend it. Brickendon Estate and Woolmers Estate are neighbouring UNESCO World Heritage Sites with a combined admission ticket that gives you access to both properties, the 2.8km Convict Farm Walk between them, and the Unshackled digital exhibition. Together they offer more than 38 original convict-built buildings and two very different perspectives on the Assignment System. Allow a full day to do both estates justice.

What is the best time of year to visit?
Woolmers Estate is open year-round. The National Rose Garden is at its most spectacular from October to February. Autumn brings beautiful colours. Winter has its own character with quieter grounds and cosy fires. The Unshackled exhibition and heritage buildings are available in all seasons regardless of weather.
Can I visit in the rain?
Yes. While much of the estate is outdoors, the Unshackled digital exhibition, the hosted homestead experience, the Nigel Peck Centre galleries, the restaurant and the gift shop are all under cover. The Woolmers Experience guided buggy tour runs in most weather conditions
What is the difference between General Admission and The Woolmers Experience?
General Admission gives you full access to the estate grounds, all 18 heritage buildings, the Unshackled exhibition, a hosted homestead experience, and the Rose Garden.
